How much money do you actually need to start with crypto?
"I don't have enough money" is the most common reason people put off starting. And it's almost always wrong. We explain why the entry barrier isn't what you think, why starting small is actually smarter than starting big, and how to work out the amount that lets you sleep at night. No jargon, no pressure.

Of all the questions we get, one is far ahead of the rest: "How much money do I actually need to start?" It almost always arrives in the same shape — someone has been thinking about crypto for months, has read a few articles, maybe even downloaded an app, and then stalled, because starting "properly" seems to require a few thousand.
The answer is shorter than you'd expect: you don't need them. And more importantly — for a beginner, a large opening amount is often a worse idea than a small one. Here's why.

Where the "you need a lot" feeling comes from
It has two sources. The first is headlines: the media reports on people who invested large sums, because small stories are boring. The second is an old habit from the world of banking — traditional investments often had minimum amounts, fees were fixed, and a small sum simply wasn't worth it.
That logic doesn't apply in crypto. Cryptocurrencies are divisible. You don't have to buy "a whole bitcoin", just as you don't have to buy a round number when exchanging currency. You buy as much as you put in — large or small.
Why starting small is actually smarter
Here's the thing most articles won't tell you: your first months in crypto aren't for making money. They're for learning.
You need to learn what a purchase feels like. How you react when the value drops — and whether you really do stay calm, the way you promised yourself you would. How the app works, where the transaction history lives, what it means when a price moves overnight. None of that can be learned from theory, only from practice.
Which is exactly why a small amount is the better teacher: big enough that you genuinely care, small enough that a mistake costs you nothing. Start big and you learn under pressure — and pressure is precisely what drives beginners into panic-selling.

How to work out your own number
Instead of guessing, ask yourself three questions. Your answers will tell you the amount better than any article can.
1. How much can I leave alone?
The only honest measure. Not "how much do I have", but how much can I leave untouched for a good while without it affecting my life. If you'd need that money for bills in three months, it isn't crypto money. Swings are normal and expected in crypto — anyone forced to sell at the wrong moment sells at a loss.
2. At what amount will I still sleep at night?
Picture that amount losing a quarter of its value tomorrow. Does that leave you cold, or will you be checking your phone at 2am? If you'd be checking your phone, the amount is too big. This isn't a joke — it's the most practical risk test there is, and it has nothing to do with how much money you have.
3. Can I repeat this next month?
The most important question, and the one beginners overlook most. Regularly investing a smaller amount almost always makes more sense for a beginner than one large purchase — because it removes the "when should I buy" question, which has no good answer.
The amount matters less than the regularity
If you take one thing from this article, make it this: for a beginner, what decides the outcome isn't the size of the investment, it's whether there's a plan.
A one-off purchase confronts you with a question nobody can answer — is today a good day to buy. A regular purchase removes it: you invest the same smaller amount at regular intervals, whatever the price is doing. When the price is high you buy a little less; when it's low, a little more. This is called DCA, or dollar-cost averaging, and it's why someone putting in a small monthly amount can build more calmly than someone who invested a lot once and now checks the chart every day.
In the app you set this up once via a recurring buy and then leave it alone.
What about fees on small amounts?
A fair concern — on small amounts, fees can eat a disproportionate share. So let's be straight about it: this month every account gets its first month with no fees, new or existing. That means you can make your first purchases without worrying how much of a small amount survives.

So — how much?
Enough that you care, and little enough that you sleep. For one person that's the price of a pizza a month; for another, considerably more. Both numbers are correct, if they came from the three questions above.
What isn't correct is waiting another year because it feels like you don't have "enough". The knowledge you build in that year with a small amount is worth more than the amount itself.
