What are Cryptocurrencies?

Step 1 of 4

What are Cryptocurrencies?

At their core, cryptocurrencies are digital or electronic assets that operate within computer or digital networks and are secured by cryptography. The first and most well-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin. However, cryptocurrencies can be described in various ways depending on who you ask. They can be seen as revolutionary currencies, a type of technology, an investment, or a new way of storing assets. One thing many agree on is that cryptocurrencies are slowly building the foundation for a new economy of the future. Simply saying that cryptocurrencies are just digital money isn't entirely accurate. Digital money can also include dollars or euros in your bank account, but they are not cryptocurrencies. A big hint lies in the name. Cryptocurrencies are currencies protected by cryptography and exist solely in the virtual world. They operate on technology called blockchain. This, along with cryptography, protects them from being counterfeited or duplicated. There are many types of cryptocurrencies that differ significantly, so forming a single, general definition is difficult. To understand cryptocurrencies as a whole, one needs to delve deeper into the different types of cryptocurrencies, their use cases, and how they operate. We will explore all this in the following chapters.
