If you've ever heard the word "crypto", you've almost certainly heard of Bitcoin (BTC) too. It's the world's first cryptocurrency and still the biggest. But what is it, and why does everyone talk about it? Let's explain it calmly, in plain language.

Bitcoin as digital money on a global network

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is digital money that works without a bank or company in the middle. Instead of one system keeping the records, a network of computers around the world keeps them together — making transactions recorded, transparent and impossible to fake. It launched in 2009, created by someone under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

Why "digital gold"?

The key trait: Bitcoin has a limited supply. There will never be more than 21 million — there's no button to print more. That scarcity is why many compare it to gold: something limited that can't be created at will.

💡 What does that mean?
Scarcity alone is not a promise of value — Bitcoin's price moves both ways. It does mean BTC follows different rules than regular money, which central banks can print.

How does Bitcoin actually work (in short)?

Picture a shared notebook the whole world can see at once. When someone sends BTC, that entry is added and the network checks it's correct. This notebook is called the blockchain. Because thousands of computers keep it, no one can secretly change it — that's the core of its security.

How do you safely buy your first?

In the CryptoUnity app it's a matter of a few taps: fund your account with an instant SEPA deposit, pick Bitcoin, confirm. Your coins are held by the regulated custodian BitGo Europe GmbH ("powered by BitGo"), in line with the EU's MiCA framework. You don't need to buy a whole Bitcoin — you can start with a small amount.

💡 Beginner tip:
Many beginners don't chase the "perfect moment" — they invest gradually (DCA), smaller amounts at regular intervals. And one rule always applies: never share your password or 2FA code.
